The UC San Diego Center for Mindfulness has spent decades building evidence-based mindfulness programs, yet many people who could benefit from them never take the first step. Through five months of research and design, our team explored how to make mindfulness feel more modern, credible, and accessible to everyday people.

The Problem

The Center for Mindfulness has already reached the audience of people who want to seek out mindfulness, but the research shows there's an entire ocean of people who are over stressed, burned out, and would actually benefit from mindfulness - they just don't know it exists yet.

Despite growing awareness of mindfulness, many newcomers perceive it as overwhelming, unfamiliar, or simply "not for people like me."

How might we help curious newcomers discover mindfulness and build a practice that fits naturally into their everyday lives?

Research & Insights

We conducted interviews with mindfulness practitioners, newcomers, and stakeholders from the Center for Mindfulness to better understand how people perceive mindfulness, and what kind of biases or misconceptions they may have related to the practice. We then identified barriers related to practicing mindfulness, including personal bandwidth and cultural relevance in modern lives.
